Post-incident report on the staking issue witnessed on October 16, 2020 Upon its launch on 14 October, the much-awaited non-custodial staking on Zilliqa was off to a great start. We saw tremendous participation and over a billion ZILs staked in just a few hours! While the first round of reward distributions went off smoothly - disbursing ZIL and gZIL - we did notice an error during the second reward cycle when rewards did not get processed. The team quickly jumped into problem solving mode, to identify and resolve the issue deftly, and alerting the community on the temporary contract freeze and our recommendations. All was well and back to normal in the following days, thanks to the team's quick action and round-the-clock efforts. The following incident report does a deep-dive investigation into the incident - breaking down the two issues and root causes, the resolution options, and outlining the successful implemention of fixes to ensure that the smart contract would continue delivering a smooth staking experience for all.
