The most recent Holochain releases have a number of bug fixes that improve performance and reliability, along with a new feature (post_commit) and a few breaking changes. The release from three weeks ago brought some important bug fixes in the network layer, improving performance and reliability. The release from two weeks ago brought more networking bug fixes, which have made gossip even more reliable. Last week’s release brings new developer-facing features and breaking changes. Lead/Org Update Q4 2021: Update on Milestones and Progress You may have noticed an uptick in stories, blogs, apps, news and announcements coming from Holo recently. In large part this is simply because there is much more that can be built on Holochain than ever before. The proof of this reality is that the wider community of projects and developers are beginning to move with haste in their respective projects. Simultaneously the Holo development team is now unblocked. Certain feature development had been on pause until Holochain had finished updating to a necessary level of features and stability. This is huge. In order to make the sequencing of our interdependent work more visible to our community, we refreshed our roadmap for Holo and included some key Holochain releases. Quick Update: Work continues on all milestones that we highlighted last week in the "Accelerating Delivery" Lead/Org Update. Most excitingly we're making use of the latest Holochain performance gains to prepare for a public release of our Elemental Chat prototype. Holochain v0.0.111 was also delivered this week as part of the weekly release cadence. Dev Camp is finishing up a 'read week' and will go deeper into building their own Holochain applications using the vastly improved Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools in week 4. Finally, work continues on the HoloFuel Pre-Release version as well as Publisher Portal.

Forty-nine degrees Celsius outside. Suddenly, the climate crisis felt pretty real. As I started writing this article back in June, sweltering in my home office, western North America was in the grip of a bizarre and unusual heat wave. One town a few hours west of me broke the all-time Canadian record at 49.6°C (121°F), and was incinerated in a wildfire later that week. The last decade has seen more than its share of wildfires up and down the west coast; some years I’ve forgotten what it was like to breathe clear air and see the stars. Meanwhile, Germany, Belgium, and the southwest US were drenched in catastrophic floodwaters. This isn’t normal. I usually have to experience something myself in order to really appreciate it. It takes me from “of course I care, in an abstract way” to “holy cow, we’ve got to do something about this.” I expect a lot of us work that way. Quick Update: A week after we began paying hosts for the use of their HoloPorts, the HoloPort Alpha Program continues to welcome new participants. We're testing and improving the program itself as we learn about the best methods for pulling data from a distributed network, and serving reports to the people participating in the program. HoloPorts in the program will be used in several ways to test Holochain and Holo apps including: integration tests, load tests, regression tests, and large scale stress tests. Soon we'll also be using these HoloPorts to welcome the public to try P2P apps. In other words, web users will able to try P2P Holochain applications published to the Holo network. Equally exciting, Dev Camp participants and community devs are getting real-time support for their Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools from the Holochain dev team. These community-created tools make is much easier to build Holochain applications. Over the next few weeks Dev Campers will be building their own app using these RAD tools. These apps will then be easy for non-developers to install and use using the new Holochain launcher.

Quick update: As of October 1st, we officially kicked off the HoloPort Alpha Program in which we begin paying hosts for the use of their HoloPort. Today, participants will receive their first Availability Metrics Report - allowing them to see at a high-level that their HoloPorts are functioning on the Holo Network and meeting the minimum requirements. HoloPorts in the program may be used by the Holo team for a variety of uses. Some will be assigned to specific developers so that they can use HoloPorts to test Holochain and Holo features during development. Some will run on our flexNet where they may be used for regression testing, load testing or other integrated testing. Others will host apps on the flexNet allowing for manual pre-release testing and still others will run large stress tests. Finally a group of HoloPorts will be allocated to the public alphaNet where soon applications will be published and made available for preview for the wider community. This program is an outstanding win-win for hosts who have invested in a HoloPort and for our team as it allows us to power through testing in a distributed context. So thank you to all who are participating. There are still a few spots left in the program for those who are interested but have not signed up yet.

Dev Pulse 105: hApp Launcher and Conductor Scheduler This week brings two big updates: One for everyone — the Holochain Launcher One for developers — a scheduler in Holochain v0.0.108 Simply: the Launcher finally makes it easy for non-developers to install and use hApps. On their own devices. Without a computer science degree. Now, all you need to do is download an installer for your OS (Windows, macOS, and Linux are all supported), and it’ll install the Holochain conductor and a basic but user-friendly admin UI. Once you’ve got the Launcher installed, running a new hApp should be as simple as downloading a package and installing it in the Launcher. This means that, as a developer, there’s a way to get your hApps into your users’ hands without much fuss. That’s pretty big news! It’s still very new, not yet production-ready, so the devs are asking for feedback — you can report an issue on GitHub or directly from the Launcher’s menu. DevPulse 104: This week’s release brings few developer-facing features, but it’s a big one in terms of performance. Holochain v0.0.107 is set to unleash an explosion of progress for the HoloPort Alpha Program. Even though we’ve released a number of Holochain versions with plenty of features and fixes, the version on the HoloPorts is over three months old. That’s mainly because we switched to a new database engine called SQLite. This change held long-term promise for making Holochain infinitely scalable via sharding, but in the short term performance was much slower than the previous database engine, LMDB. The Holo team decided it would make an unacceptable experience for Elemental Chat testers, so they decided to stay with the LMDB version until the SQLite version could match its speed. blog.holochain.org/holochain-v0-0-107-a-release-to-build-on/

The HoloFuel hApp is now running in a hosted dev test where we are testing transaction flows - this will require, load testing and several pre-release tests before it can be made available in an alpha preview. Hopefully, we can share some screenshots or video soon as our testers get their hands on it. Another big effort that is underway in the Holo dev team is a refactor of the host registration process to initialise HoloPorts so that all the underlying apps required run with the same user keys - this is critical for invoicing and payment on the hosting network. This change is one that will take some time and the work will continue in parallel while we build, deploy and test new versions of the Host Console, HoloFuel and eventually Publisher Portal. We are waiting to launch hosted Elemental Chat to alpha preview until we can get the HoloPort Alpha program operational. This program incentivises HoloPort owners to keep their HoloPorts turned on and that will ensure that when alpha preview releases get used more widely, we have enough HoloPorts supporting the different networks. We're working to open registration for the program as soon as possible and it looks like that is still at least a week away.

Elemental Chat Testing Strong We’ve been testing the Holo hosted version of Elemental Chat for two weeks now, and so far everything is working well. Most messages arrive quickly, even as new participants join and post messages. Full DevPulse article: blog.holochain.org/elemental-chat-testing-strong/
